Just out for a cruise.  12-15 Knot, Westerly.  Went out off East Pier.  Very choppy, lots of sailboats to avoid.  Used 6.5m,117L,32cm

Started at the local (Island bay) at 1100 for the turn of the tide. Wind was 5-15 from sw to nw. After a couple of hours of sitting in wind holes I had a break. The wind filled in to perfection but on returning to the water I slipped on the exposed papa rock, sat hard on my arse, and smashed the tail of the titan.

Only option left (Starboard W58 in garage having fin box realigned) was the Yellow submarine (Cut down Strapper 88L 53cm wide salom) that floats like a brick. Since I only had the 7m Redline with me that got attached as did a stupidly small slider 29 fin.

Well since the tide was coming in I cheated a bit and played in the shallows in the bay with the cliffs increasing the windspeed due to the funnel effect. Only a 260m run in the bay but I had not sailed this board for about 18months since I added a bit of V to the tail. Very surprised that the fin worked so well as its area is so very small. Even managed a run out of the bay down towards Kauri Point MOD wharf before I realised I was doing 20 odd knots in 15k wind on a board I have never been able to jibe because it preferred to sink rather than turn.

Well I did managed to jibe it and picked up the alpha for the day. John (another local windsurfer) came down to the beach and pissed himself laughing at me sailing back with water at mid-thigh with the board acting like,  well, a submarine.

So not stunning results but it taught me a bit about fins and unlikley combos...

@ Martin - hope you are now feeling better after that crash on Thursday - sorry you could'nt sail - that CA would have smoked!!

Good dedication Chris!  Sorry to hear about the smash, but obviously you got some good practice balancing!  What happened to Martin?

Hi Guys - glad to see you got out, thanks for the words – hope the Titan fixes up ok, Chris.  Went out Thurs as the gale was coming thro', reading 30+ average at Takapuna with the gusts off the scale - but in Shoal Bay who knows (less?) - Stanley was out on a 5m0 with 85L, so couldn't leave him all alone, tho' the gusts looked off-putting.  Went out on a 5m0 with CA SL58 & Venom 34, crossed with a peak of 29kn - without really getting comfortable or controlled - coming back, lost it at about 27kn - next thing I know I was feet down, vertical in the water with about an arms length of water over my head!  Fortunately clear of board & rig - surface to find the panel above the boom of the Gaastra Poison completely blown thro'.  Slight whiplash neck & shoulder strain suggested I might have put the panel out with my helmet?  I have a lozenge shaped bruise (~10x5) above the hip on the side (guess where the harness went in) – now the swelling is coming down, I’m certain there are no tears, and the lower ribs are sore and click a bit – but nothing broken.  So, hopefully a few more days rest will see it right – stupid to go out, should know better at my age – apart from repairing the sail, missing out on several days sailing with realistic conditions is frustrating!
