craiggoo (2352km):
5905 days ago Nice westerly breeze, so I left work early and was on the water before 4pm. Got some nice runs up towards Bay View and back. All was going well, then my mast broke for no particular reason. It broke at the spigot. The top and bottom were in good shape, just the spigot was mangled. I was still about 1.5 km off shore, and I was drifting towards the port. The boom was still attached to the bottom, and I managed to sail for about 400 m on my knees, just barely holding the boom up with the top half of the sail folded over. Luckily there was an optimus race going on nearby, with 2 support boats. One of them noticed me waving, and came and gave me a lift in to the beach. Well done Ollie and Matt! I went back to the sailing club a bit later and gave them a bit of $$ in appreciation... you never know when you might need them again!

14/03/2009 - Bad luck with the mast Craig. Good to see someone is keeping an eye on you in those offshore winds thou (I know you specialise in those long distances but 9000 km to next landfall is quite a way!)
Well yesterday up here was a bit iffy a Island Bay so I made the call not to go out but I took the kids to the beach/park anyway. Was very shifty but half an hour later it came in (right on low tide too) at 15-18knots! .Oh well next time...
Looks like it will go easterly up here so I will see if I can get out Sunday.
Cheers
Chris
