Andrew Daff (9318km): Nice day for mid winter. New 4/3 kept me toasty warm. Wind 23-28 SW. Maybe the rare short gust to 30. I went down at 10am to find the tide all the way up the road. Amazingly, Craigs car was parked up the sand dune. That was the first hint that he had got there pretty early! When I finally got in at midday the second hint was that he was wearing his headlights!!!!! Man that lad is mad!! 4.30am start in the dark and freezing cold - on his own!!
Peter and Adrian were waiting fo the tide to drop as well. Wind looked very south so I went with 5m KA Koncept on IS 87 slalom with Time Machine speed 26. Geared up for Alphas and a one hour. I threw in a few Alphas and then set off for an hour. All was well until about 15 mins in when I missed my grip on the boom and dropped the sail. Full on sunken rig. Bugga! I figured I would go another hour starting there but at 45mins in a squall hit just as I hit the speed run. I was really struggling to hold the board on the water at mid 30K's and no way I was going to make a gybe so I just kept going down the speed run. Peaked at 41.2 knots and 40 knot 10 second. That is a PB by a LARGE margin for me on that board! It was really on the edge though. Even at 120 off the wind the board was wanting to fly! I crash stopped at the end and just had to hold the rig down for a couple of minutes 'till the squall abated. Now I had two stops and I was in no condition to start again so I just kept going to make the best of it including another fluffed gybe and slow waterstart. After a bit of a rest I got the CA40 for a few runs. I tink the wind filled in a bit better but it was still up and down a lot and always below 30 knots but I managed a 42 peak and a couple of 41, 10 sec runs so it was a bit of fun. Course was too square for better speeds. Might have to do it all again tomorrow. Conditions look just a touch better for outright speed runs by the forecasts. Thanks for the bun Peter!
kato (15334km): Arrived at the Pit by 4am and was greeted by a beautiful white owl sitting on some of the drift wood. By the time i got every thing ready it was 6am when I hit the water. The new green LEDs down the course work really well and with a red at each end it was just follow the dotted hit red and jybe. Ran the AB with the Ka 5.8 in the dark, just didn,t want to take to many risks. Once the sun came up, swaped to the Ka 6.6 and went on some looong crusy runs up the inlet (7.5 kms each way) with two wedgies for company. Then the wind went to the SW and I had a long beat back up wind to the strip. The best NM was still on the strip with a jybe Chased the guys around for a few hrs till we all ran out of puff. Prefect Pit weather, windy, cold, sunny, hail, rain and flat Heres hoping that we get a few windy weeks form now on.
Peter Johnston (5021km): Good day at the pit but lost a bit of fitness due to our lack of wind here for 5 or 6 weeks. Started on JP Super-x 96L with Tushy x-15 5.2 for a go at a few alphas, but dropped too many gybes. A bit rusty! Switched to Lorch Div S 63L speed board with KA 23 cm assy when the wind came up a bit. Getting a bit fatigued by then and had a couple of spinouts on the runs back with resulting hard falls. Decided to call it a day. Had to really focus to stay awake on the 2.5 hr drive back to Melbourne. Great to get out on the water with some of the crew again. Commiserations to those with bugs or work committments. Tomorrow looks good also though but alas I can't make it.
Shelby (3638km): Pretty square on the coarse all day, which meant I had to do a bear off slingshot to get my peak - FUN! Normally I get a lull in my one hour, today I was skunked by a 35+ squall for 5 minutes. CA SL55,CA SP40,RSR 6.2.
Ado (2237km): Fun with some sun. Not so cold after all. Checked data after Daffy noticed irregularties. |
