Not a bad session but it was too broad for best speeds.

25-35 knots West. Started with 5.0 on CA40 with 21cm Lockwood custom fin and weight jacket (4.5kg). Did best run. Had a scare on the way back when my outhaul slipped and I got stuck in the channel and couldn't waterstart (didn't realise why until I finally got to shore Frown).

Changed to 4.4m without weight jacket and had a few nice runs but felt too broad and underpowered on the course.

Changed to KA 20cm assy to see the difference. Felt more solid but not quite as slippery.

Went back to 5m sail and did second best run. Walking back the sail whacked down on my helmet in a gust and a short split appeared near the the middle of the luff. Bugger! Didn't want to use it and make it worse as it was small and easy to fix. Went back to the 4.4m but again felt underpowered. Tide coming in, rolling waves getting larger, course betting broader, body giving out: gave up. Watched Tony W. for a couple of runs and left.

Thanks to Stuart Eustice for his assistance after my crash. Resting a while after the crash was not a good option because the rig was drifting away from the shore quite fast.

The back footstrap screw on my SP40 board disconected from the board in the beginning of the run. Basically the plastic thread failed.

Initially I thought that I just missed the footstrap with my back foot and continued sailing. Then I looked at my back footstrap and discovered that it was disconnected at one end, not holding my foot at all. By that time I reached speed about 36+ knots and the chop and then crashed, landing some 20m away from the board.

My experimental "safety harness line" promptly disconnected me from the rig and there was no injury (apart from slight dizziness for a few minutes) and no equipment damage.

However, I could not sail without back footstrap and had to finish the session well before Andrew Daff did.

About as close to the perfect direction wind as you can get at the PiT  these days I reckon! - not quite as strong as I could have handled being so broad but that probably would have made the rolling chop bigger than the 1 foot it already was in the pull up zone - so I didn't come a cropper down thereInnocent

Screwed my Battens up that tight before I went out that I broke my main batten 4 inches behind my back hand - after it fully snapped on the second run I didn't have any draft movement issues after that!!!

RSR5.8,CA SP40,Lockwood oven baked 23.5 raked weapon.

enough wind but way broad. felt too broad to be fast, but in the end certainly not a slow day. maybe just not comfortable.  turned in a string of 42 and 41 10sec's but last one was 33. needed that one more run to make it respectable. instead got dragged way down on the avg. good turnout for a work day!!

I saw the forecast and suspected there may be some pretty decent speeds emanating from down your way today - that's pretty bloody quick for "not a bad session"!!

Expect some big speeds from Tony Wynhoven. As I was walking back after one of my last runs, cursing my luck that I had just had a poor run underpowered and there was now a squall at 35+ I was missing, Tony Loomed out of the sand mist going like hell! 45+ I believe. When I left he had  5 runs so hoping he could back it up. :-)

Experimental safety release harness lines are in development/testing for 3 years. The one that broke today had 1 tonne rating on rope and ~0.4 tonne on webbing. The webbing broke on one side - setting me on a nice fly path well away from the rig.

Years of research and testing have proven that the spectra rope needs to be higher rated, because it is subject to abrasive action in the nylon sleeve, especially when some sand gets in the sleeve. Also, it is better when boom attachment webbing breaks, because the rest of the harness remains intact. When rope breaks, the nylon sleeve that protects the rope from your harness hook gets lost...

It was my very first high-speed sailing crash. Prior to this crash I only hit a few sandbars...

But Mal Faukner insisted that my flight and crash demonstrated lots of experience...

Yep. Launching into the run was pretty intense in a squall but as you came out past the dunes and turned broad the pressure dropped significantly unless you got an almighty gust.

The rolling chop was a bugger in the slow down area. I had a bum clenching moment on the first run as I slowed when the fin let go after a few bounces at 40 kts plus. Fortunately, it just went a bit more sideways and didn't let go completely or the rail catch 'til I slowed to a stop. Phew! There is something very forgiving about Chris's fin designs. :-)

whoa, awesome session. Superb PB's Tom and Stuart.

Interesting about the safety release harness lines. I use adjustable NP 24-31inch  lines and they break where the rope is stitched to the webbing, if you get a hooked in and slammed. I thought it was a deliberate 'safety' measure. It has sure saved my rig and me, a few times.
