Great session at SB with Mark. Got down there @ 2.30 and saw him flying around on his 7.0 Loft. I ummed and ahhed between my 7.0 TR5 and shiny new 6.6 TR7. Thought it might fill in, so opted for the 6.6.
Mark came in and said he was comfy on the 7. I'm 25kg heavier, so thought the 6.6 might be underdone. Couldn't be arsed changing up sails, so plugged in the 111 Futura + 40 choco weedie for a bit more float. Rigged the 6.6 pretty full.
Went for some alpha's and finally worked out the missing piece of the puzzle (and why I'm still stuck on 23)....acceleration out of the gybe!! The Futura was smoking out of the gybes with speed to burn. Obviously a bit of extra width and volume in the tail makes all the difference. Unfortunately all my good ones were wide. Had a 24.7 alpha at 54m prox!!
24.7 would've smashed my long standing 23.08 alpha PB. At least I now know what works!
Mark suggested a Pengo's run for a crack at the NM. Plugged in the 93 S-Type and headed up to the island. Gave Mark a 100m start and took off after him for an adrenaline-charged run back into the pond. An ocean NM PB, so rapt with the result. Mark and I were pretty evenly matched for speed, and I only caught him after he spun out.
Changed boards again and plugged in the 83L Lorch speed stick + 28 FO weedster for some speed runs. Got my 2sec and some of my 10 sec runs on this combo, but she was only marginally quicker than the S-Type and hard yards water starting and getting back upwind. I was also spinning out on every run, so more tuning required to sort that out.
Overall a ripper sesh. Stoked with the TR7s...great sesh on Wednesday on the 7.6 and well powered today on the 6.6. Goes to show the range of these new sails. Mark's Loft was rigged quite flat, my TR7 was quite full, and despite a 25kg weight differential we were both comfortably powered.
