jdemol (1106km): Lake Illawarra, NSW, AU Ezzy 5.2 on 80L rrd fsw then 9.0 severne code red on mistral equipe 1 raceboard. Arrived around 12, then spent a lot of time walking around in the water with the 80L fsw trying to find some wind. Got very frustrated seeing bits of wind here and there but unable to get to it, so went in and (overeacting slightly) rigged my 9.0m Severne on my old mistral equipe raceboard. Had an epic sail on the raceboard! It definitely worked bringing the wind in, it got pretty exciting particularly when my centerboard dropped down from banging on the chop going downwind in a 30+kt gust. Scary but fun. It felt like it would go faster with a slightly bigger weed fin, because you need some lift to get the centreboard slot out of the water. Nice to see Darren and Rob getting out on some new speed boards. Can't wait to have a go on one...

A bit up and down today, Just played around with some new weed fins for my quad for a while. Good to see a big turn out fom the team.
rob (422km): Lake Illawarra, NSW, AU think i did more walking than sailing today but it was fun.the best was right at the end just before sunset.i should be at the lake tomorow morning however sailing from the clubhouse to avoid the very long walk.
bushfire (6668km): Lake Illawarra, NSW, AU. Primbee, W 10 -30 knots. Low lake level I found today quite hard - maybe it was the puffy/gusty wind or the low lake level or using the speed board for most of the day. I'm certainly buggered now! I used one of Jase's Makani weed fins in the JP SS first up and found it fast but quite hard to use in the weedy conditions - not enough rake to shed the weed making it hard to get going. The wind picked up so I swapped over to the JP 49 with a brand new MU speed delta 15cm. Wow this fin has such small depth that it was ideal for the shallow lake conditions today. The speed board was great fun in the gusts - the fin is quite sensitive to back foot pressure when broad reaching but fast and friendly - it regains grip quickly without much wrestling. I was surprised how little wind the speed board needs to get going! Another big day for the gustbusters with a great turnout. Also great to catch up with the Sydney guys as well - Michael T and Chris T. Nice to see Uncle Mike on the water too! My trusty V8 6.5m suffered a split panel late in the day - maybe time to pension it off!
TERRY (5144km): Lake Illawarra, NSW, AU low tide + weed + gusty winds = tired pensioner. |
