Tricky (3458km): What a masive session should know better, the gusty westerly is never quite square off shore & it puts up a savage confused chop when you get out to the wind line. Seemed windier than it was. Rigged the 5.8 koncept on the CA SL101 LE 30 weedie, called it quits early so I didnt have to walk too far in with the tide running out. 8 - 18 knots with lots of 0-22 bullets made sailing challanging. Prity happy with a 29 in that sort of thump & bump washing machine.
Choco (9631km): Long way to go to sail 5km, sailed from 5 mile went out for a warm up run turned heading back to the cars and decided to let it go off the wind it was windy, weed fin let go and the rail of the board tripped over and it happen in slow motion I was parallel to the water looking at the sail then nearly upside down looking at the sail and when I flew away from the gear and hit the water it was like fast forward, no damage to gear lump on my shin and strained knee lost my gps's but found them floating in the aquapac, checking the tracks I spun out at 40knts after I hit my peak speed.
Conditions were all over the place very gusty water was a mess and dead weed floating free in alot of places just under the surface, went back in and decided to switch to smaller board met Peter from Vic and while chatting I felt my knee tightening up and getting real sore so decided not to risk it,lot more stories to come. Lake George gusts 40knts TR8 5.1 RS Speed 22cm weedy
Jimbob (11323km): George from the bog hole 5 mile drift, wind N to Nw too bloody much. went out on the new misslie with 07 5.0 Koncept (RIP) and decrepit 21 weedy. was way out of my league today was fulln gusts, got out and shit myself so had to put on more outhall actually 4 full notches from where I normally run just to survive, seeing I was out though i better art least do one run and test the Decprepit weedy, flat as a bisciut sail and standing up chickening out the first run and a 41.7 on the dial do another run at 41.3 not commiting at all and i must say Mike you done a great job fin was solid as, decided to just get back started a starboard run downwind while still on the flat weed beds to make a bit easier upwind over the middle bouncy overpowered stuff when just exellerated up to 40 and bang the boom broke between the harness lines and gear flew 100 metres through the air, totalled one carbon boom (fibrespar) boom to damaged to turn around and top panel and batten of sail trashed, out from barby island so crawled to cockys in bloody storm wind, sat there then started the walk abiut 8 k's around and back. drove back over later and could'nt get there as water had blown right into the top lake had a eal bush bash to get it.
only 4 k's today bloody embarrasing

Dave M (3481km): Goolwa Lake, SA, AU Wind: W-WSW Very Gusty 15-25 thought about Lake George but decided to stay home.. glad i did sounds like it would have been too much for Me ! JP Slalom 104 KA Koncept 5.8 Select 31 waited till late in the day when the wind swung a bit further to the south. was still too west to be good but went out anyway, rigged then waited ..... no wind .. it came back in so had a go. tried the 86L but never made it far from the shore (Off Shore), came back and took the JP slalom. too much board in the big gusts but at least i could float in the Lulls. hard work but always nice to be on the water
Kimba (5126km): A quick day trip to LG was the plan, had to leave at lunch so I wanted to get on the water early. I drove through the night and caught a 1/2 hour power nap when I arrived in Beachport. After getting some supplies(Farmers Union :) I headed out to 5 mile. I didn't want to go to the spit and risk scratching the new black beast so I resigned to the fact that I would have to drag myself a few hundread metres through thigh deep slop. Jamie, Hamma and Chocco rocked up and said they were heading to the spit, they came back once they saw how much the water had blown out, in which time I was hitting the water. This was the first test of my mXr fins, I got the 40 wide as a solid speed fin with weed shedding rake. The curved leading edge is ideal at the tip third is about 45 degrees, the mid third around 40 and the base third 35. This means you get more rake where you need it and less where you dont. I did the feet in straps, hooked in drag through the mud and headed upwind. The M1was flapping all over the place so I eased the DH and it felt much better. I am probably 1cm off spec which makes sense given my weight. The M1 doesn't like to be too flat when heading upwind either so I made a few tweaks and started getting balanced. The mXr UFO Wide 40 22cm was shedding weed well but you had to start in a muddy patch as the water was getting low from the wind blowing it into the previously dry lake bed that you drive over to get to Cocky's Point. Went upwind like a pointer and was nice down as well. I really felt the shallow water and thick weed limiting peaks in the 44's but only really managed to get 2 proper cracks at 10s as the wind went from 20-30 to 30 with 40 knot random bullets. I sat in the water and did a few small reaches waiting for the change to W but it never came so I heading back in to get packed up and on the road. I won't miss that mud! Sorry to hear about your Boom Jamie. Still can't believe how quickly you did that walk back(even getting blown over twice!) I hope you had fun in the surf. Spectacular crash Choco, exactly as you describe it. I can't believe how long it went for, it was like a train wreck and easy to see half way across the lake. Good to see you again Peter, I hope you didnt require the body armour,... Thanks for the Muffins! JP49 - Machine M1 6.1 - mXr 40 22 Lake George 20-30 then 30-40 *EDIT* |
