Nice after work session at my new local - Peli Point.

A bit undercooked on 5.8 Koncept 08.

Used Gladiator 95 for the early part of the session [windiest] when I had intentions of going for an hour but settled for a few alphas. A few runs across the river mostly airbourne had me changing down to CA 47 and 26 tectonics falcon. Wind eased towards the end.

Vote 1 for daylight saving!!!

Great day on the Swan. 5.8m all day but mostly underpowered. Started at Melville using the SP44 and a CL23Asy. Got some nice squirts over the shallows. The wind got very patchy and I noticed the LE of the fin was getting a bit rough so I decided to try the SP40 with CL21Asy. That felt great and even though the wind had dropped I still got a 38 on the dial in the chop in front of the carpark. I then did a couple of runs on the SP50 but the wind was getting super patchy. Then out came the virgin CA62 slalom board. It was getting late but I thought I'd better break it in so I strapped it up and chucked in a CL35slalom fin and headed off to Peli with the 5.8m. Got my best NM of the day on the first run. The wind was heaps stronger at Peli, so it was fun with the big fin. Did some slalom with Rowan and Luke, then it was getting dark so headed back to Melville. The wind was super light up there (and had been for a while apparently) but there was enough volume to float in. Great day! Hope we get some more of these this summer.

very quick session @ PW from about 7-8pm after uni. wind seemed pretty patchy, only got close to powered on one run. setup feeling very good though; RSR 5.8 missile S jp30@30. The fin seemed to match up with the board very well, trimming great, and not catching any weed (some light weed @ pw).

Nice session at Peli Point, SW wind ,  started with W49, 6.1CR and then Isonic 86.

Great speeds by PD and Slowey in this chop.

Surprised 25. Surely the fastest in WA for the day? Does that nm include a gybe?

Evets

Yes the mile had a gybe and the chop was about 3 foot high mid river;

and no - heard Slowey pulled a 41 up at Melville over the shallow flats!!

Get on and post Chris!

Ado - yes Claude was out and S'boat launched from Melville blew the doors down there by all accounts and came down to Peli as the wind was starting to fade.

Great to see Robbie Radis was out charging around and showing flashes of that brilliance he'll never lose on a 6.7 RSR

The runs over the shallows were the best - but still bloody choppy - bailed a few after spinning out on the run-in through 40-50 cm chop. Board is confidence inspiring though - nice design CL!

damn that was fun... Firie, my fastest runs were on the SP44/23 fin. I only pulled out the 101 liter SL62 as it was getting dark. NM was literally the first run on the board- stretching the footstraps. I took off from the carpark and sailed down to Peli Pt. Its a great board. Gybes very easily and bashed over the worst of the chop piece of cake. Nice and safe in rough conditions. It will be excellent in the ocean and for slalom racing, which is why I got it.

Hey Crasher, it wasnt too windy at Melville either... a couple of (very) small puffs came through but it was way stronger and more consistent at Peli when I sailed down there. Somehow Peli was sucking the wind... But with the wind comes the chop. Thats why Melville is my pick of the metro spots for speed. Its always so gusty the chop doesnt build that much. Looking forward to a proper windy day.

Well done team SRM - Claude and Chris - hope to [should] have October in the bag!

Lao shi - tide was about 0.9m at 6pm and rising so it was deep enough [and hence choppy]. Did a couple of runs through with my gladiator 95 with a 32cm falcon first up and didn't hit bottom so charged it with the CA47 and 26cm falcon on the rising tide. I have sailed the same area on about 0.7m tide and its much flatter but the risk of bottoming out is very real.

same with Melville. Suicide with anything bigger than 26cm. Rake helps to minimise the chances of a catapault when you run aground. Not flash for the fin though. Just realised yesterday was my PB for Melville on the GPS dial,  and only 0.2 off my WA PB. I cant wait for a proper windy day there! ie one where the 5.8m is actually powered up. bring it on!!!

So what's making the all differences with people sailing so much faster on the swan ocean than a season or two ago??

Slowboat

WA
Australia
5897 days ago

ummmm a certain board brand perhaps Sealed. Fins. Finding flat water. Going shallower. Going broader. All good things for improved speed... The Swan Ocean offers some very fast conditions at certain times... Patches of gold. But its not often that the planets align and we see more than 22kts wind  in the gusts.

Certainly my CA board [SP47] has helped me of late but I have done 38s at Peli Point on my 52cm Kinetic and 37s at Melville on the 59cm gladiator. But they were 'once or twice a season' type days.

My last two outings at Peli on the CA47 have yielded [combined] 5 or so separate 38+ 2sec peaks in choppy and less than 'always fully powered' 5.8 conditions.

My prediction is that when we get those 'once or twice a season' type days the Mother Swan will deliver some very high peaks in summer 08/09.

Overall Hardie I'd say better equipment and more 'spirit of adventure' [read balls] over the shallows.

PS - I'm too fat for Melville - too gusty at 95+kg - learning to love Peli now I work spitting distance away!

Thanks for getting back to me Chris, I've had my SL58 now for a couple of weeks and already have had a few PB's on it. I was very surprised how well it handled our rough conditions, it just eats it, but then James said it would Cool

I can see it's going to be a long love affair with the CA Kiss
