Long session.  Got to the beach at 8:30 am and left at 8:40 pm.  On the water by 9 and took 20 minutes to sail the first 1 nm (dogging in no wind).  Forecast was for a SSW to come through at 10-15 knots, followed by a SE change at 15-25 mid-afternoon.  First hr was hopeless, but got planing a bit.  Next few hours were good, then it became light again and was difficult to keep on the plane, then the wind picked up again from the SSW for a few hours.  Never over 15 knots, but managing to keep on the plane most of the time and managed runs with max speeds in the 20's.  The wind picked up at around 4PM with the SE  change.  Almost overpowered and feeling a bit knackered.  Thought about changing down, but decided to keep at it.  Realised that I may be able to make it to 300 km's if I can keep sailing.  Wind was fluctuating between 20-25 knots, with the stronger squalls really pushing the limits.  Aimed to do 170 nautical miles and then call it a day.  Managed 171.1 and could probably have done one more run of around 5-6 nm, but getting dark, still really windy and I'd already made it to 170.

Had planned to go for distance today, but you never know what the weather will bring.  Really felt underpowered for the majority of the session (first 6-7 hrs), but this was probably not a bad thing, as it wasn't too demanding.  Last few hours were windy and hard work.

Absolutely wrapped to make it over 300 km's.  Distance posted above is Doppler.  Total distance was 323.756 km.  All up a full 11 hrs and 15 minutes, minus two toilet stops (drinking too much water).

Steve, didn't even see you out sailing, must have been downwind a bit? Glad you made it out.

Sailed the 2009 iSonic 122 with 40 cm fin and Severne 7.6m SSR.  Absolutely killer combination, everything felt balanced the whole time.

First sail on slalom gear in nearly 5 months. Thats what happens with a new job working almost 6 days a week. I cannot believe how rusty I am, just goes to show even if you only get out once a week it keeps you in touch. Wind was meant to get up to 25 knots but it was only 15-20 knots SSW. Anyway great to be back out again. Dave has been sailing all day and he may have a distance record coming up so stay tuned. I had the 08 Isonic 122 and 6.6 SSR Severne. Should have rigged up the SSR 7.6 because I was under powered most of the time, thought it would have got windier.

Thanks Anthony, next time Henty is looking good I am going there with Dave. I sailed at SBay today and got out on the water at 1pm. Dave sailed past me and he was definately on a mission for distance. He was out on the water at 9.00 am. I came in at 4pm and he was still out there. Hopefully he didnt break anything because I couldnt see him anywhere after I left. Looking forward to seeing your post Dave.

Wow Dave, your the man. That is awesome, huge effort. I thought you were going for something around the 250 km mark but over 300km is amazing. Well done. I came in just before that change came through.

Thanks guys, a little sore this morning.  I had the GT-11 and GT-31 with me yesterday.  The GT-11 had a few erroneous spikes, which I deleted and was happy enough that the results were right, but was concerned that the screen display read 171.1 nm (316.877), the total distance was 323.756 and the total doppler distance was 313.220 nm's.  The GT-31 display was 170.6 nm (315.951), but the unit generated 4 files of 1024 kb and another smaller file so I didn't bother trying to sort that data out.  This morning I've added up the individual distances in each file (and subtracted small spikes at the beginning where each new file was created and speeds went from 0 to around 20 knots) and also combined them all as one file using Realspeed.

Individual distances added up were 316.047 and 315.350 for Total Distance and Doppler Distance, respectively.  When the files were combined by Realspeed it showed 314.492 and 315.501 for Total Distance and Doppler Distance, respectively.  I've edited my scores to show the GT-31 data using the 5 files combined by Realspeed. The calculated Doppler reading of 315.501 matches the screen display of 315.951 pretty well.

Session shown below shows the wind was more SSW to begin with and then swung more SSE.  Due to the light wind, I needed to sail where the land funnelled in to get the strongest of the SSW'ly and then leave that spot as soon as it started to swing SSE

Nice photo. I just spoke to Dave and he said he is hardly sore at all from yesterday.

A little sore, but no cramps during sailing or since.  Hands don't have blisters, but were red and pretty sore last night.  Having a really balanced rig and board combo helped, and not being over-powered for the majority of the session probably made a big difference.

Off to a work Christmas BBQ now ... a cold beer should hit the spot.

Top effort. 11 Hrs and 315kms. I didn't think that bar would be raised. Well done. What is the average run distance approx?

Dave Morehead

Most runs were around 4.0-4.5 km in length, with the ones across into the other bay around 7 km.

Top effort Dave - I was hoping to rack up a pb of 150km or so this summer and hit the front momentarily, but I guess I need to rethink that. Is that distance a world record????

Kato, I'd been in awe of your efforts for a while and had been waiting to get the chance to do an all day sail to see what I could get.  Not the sort of thing one wants to attempt to often, but I'm sure it won't be long before you give it another go.  It's certainly a battle with the wind, equipment and having enough daylight hours.  The wind especially can ruin an attempt at any time if it decides not to cooperate.

Too true Dave,I have a few attempts at repeating a 300 attempt only to have the wind or light disapear, its what makes it fun.The unknown,so you just push as hard as you dareSmile
