Mixed day for me. I got there at around 1:30 and rigged up the 6.2 Hellcat, JP FSW, and Select 32 fin. Des was out there on a 7.8!! I was a bit underpowered at first, and then it picked up and it took me a while to get my gear tuned in, but then when I did, it was going great. The conditions were not perfect, being a bit gusty, but I snagged a couple of good gusts down the runway. I felt pretty comfortable on these runs, so could have used more wind, but not complaining about the results.

Anyway, the cloud came through, and the wind was getting a bit flukey, so went back downwind, and was reaching there (was nice and the water had gotten less choppy). Anyway, I am cruising, and not really concentrating, and a chop knocks my front foot out of the strap, which falls into the water and I had a bad catapult. I have not had a catapult like that in years. I went with it to avoid board damage, but unfortuantely I damaged the sail badly!! Panel above the boom is ripped in two. Leach completely seperated. Only about 6 inches of luff pocket holding the top of the sail to the bottom. I hope I can get it repaired, as it has done some damage to multiple panels. Lucky I got a tow from a boat in, and that cut my sailing short unfortunately!!

Before the sail damage, it was a great sail. Now I am just hoping I can get it fixed quickly (as I use it 90% of the time), and cheaply!! :(

Cheers,

Adrian

Could not really get going well. Underpowered most of the time and the wind was gusty. By gusty I mean wind up and down about 20 knots every 20 seconds. So its hard to get settled. I got out as the clouds came over and the wind seemed to drop. Oh well it was good to get out at all. Good post session ambience at the carpark but I was in a rush to get home.

Well done on the PBs Adrian!

Bad luck about the catapult and damage done. Thats part of windsurfing. You would be amazed at what a good sailmaker can repair. I think I have the business card of one I met on the Central Coast. He seemed pretty good and enthusiastic. He is a windsurfer and kiter. I have not had any work needed so I can't say for sure what his work is like.

It was a bit of an all over the place wind today. Started on a 7,8m and 115 Slalom board. The wind seemed to be building so I rigged down to a 6.2 and 90L slalom and then ofcourse it dropped off and became very gusty, should have left the 7.8 rigged! My higher speeds were on the big gear as i did a lot of slogging on the smaller stuff. Cant complain it was great day of sailing overall.

First time I used KA72 site, pretty cool and makes it all easy, like it!

Nic work Adrian. Sorry to hear about the sail. Baracouta sails do a good good repair at a reasonable cost. Not too far from Kyeemagh...

Thanks guys... I am planning to ring Baracouta tomorrow. Might drive out there in my lunch break.

To be honest, I was not expecting the 2s to be that high. I was expecting something in the 32s. I know my GPS went crazy high after the catapult (like 40knots), but I thought KA72 filters that out. I plan to go through the file with some other software to make sure it is legit. I am confident the 5X10 is good. I know I was slowly edging up the max speed, so I had some good runs (peaking around 32). Normally I have about a 2 knot gap between my 2s and 5X10, and today 3 knots... so not sure if this was a quick spike on one of my runs or an error due the the catapult. Is there any free software I can use to examine the GPS file to determine this??

Cheers,

Adrian

Email the file to me and I'll run it through Realspeed.

Hopefully someone else got out there to back up your results as mine are a bit ordinary. I would have loved to have gone down to Kyeemagh at 11am today but it was not possible.

Good work Adrian, maybe that's why that sail fell apart.

I think I'll give up on the runway and go back to my usual spot for the downwinder. The wind on the runway never seems to stay on for long enough to get a decent run.

Hi Guys,

I will send you the gpx file tonight Karl. Can I download and use RealSpeed? I would be interested in seeing more detail. Unfortunately the KA72 option, while very simple and easy, does not really give you any detail about where and when your data came from.

Des, Our results are so close... anyone would think we were sailing togeather!! :) Well done mate!! I think we can both be proud with those results on gear that is not really made for speed... It was only guys on race/slalom/speed gear that were going faster.

I have to agree Des... right up at the top does not often fill out nicely unless you have the perfect angle/tide/wind consistency. I was getting some 32 knot runs much further down... still up near the runway, but about level with the take off point on the beach. I was not going parallel with the runway... heading towards it from about 200m out and finishing the run as I got close.

I was dissppointed when my sail let go. The conditions seemed really good. It was much flatter then when I first went out probably due to change in tide, and I had my gear dialled in nicely. Was just reaching and felt nicely powered up and comfortable and fast. I doubt I would have gone any faster, but I was concentrating on getting the kms up and trying an attempt at a good Nm.

Cheers,

Adrian

Brings back memories!! I have not sailed there since about the mid 90s!! At one point I did alot of sailing at Palm Beach... until I tired Botany Bay. Now I won't sail anywhere else in Sydney (but have had some great sails on central coast and Sanctuary point etc.)
