A good days sailing on Wallis Lake at the sailing club with Gabe & Chris, Andre, Bill & Anton and Robert down from Old Bar. It took a little while for the wind to build but when it did it was OK with a 6m sail and at the finish a smaller sail would have been OK.

Queens Lake, NSW, AU

HMAS Falcon 113, 7.8 RS:S, 38 weedy

Sailed with Phil and Steve. I got down there about 2ish. Wind moving from wsw to sws, say 5-18kn. Super gusty

Super low tide so it was very, very shallow on the eatern side. With my 38cm fin I kept dragging on the weed on the speed strip, it would nearly throw me off, even with the weed fin - one of those delta fins would be the go! Didnt feel that fast today, very choppy on the main drag which is where I went back to after I couldnt get a good run behind the mud bank. Steve had a smaller fin and was blazing across the strip - well done mate

Nice way to spend the arvo - better than work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another great afternoon at Queens Lake. Sw at 10- 20 knots. Joined by Phil and Adam later. Wind a bit stronger than saturday but still found plenty of flat water at the eastern end of the lake.

Wallis Lake, NSW, AU. A challenging session with a 6m sail. Should have rigged down to be more comfortable. Strongest wind for ages, and a few big crashes and one major swimming session to get gear back. I haven't had such cold hands in years, so did not sail that long. Great work on all the PB's guys! Our team rocks!!!!

Sailing Club, Wallis Lake, NSW, AU.Gotta be the coldest day this year sailing! BRRR!! Fanatic SL104,BP38 weedy,Gaastra 6.5 GTX.Got there jsut before lunch and we all had trouble deciding what to rig.It was blowing W-WSW 10-15k and it finally started to fill in a bit. The water was quite choppy and not very inspiring, but gradually got better as the tide went out.My hands were freezing!

A quick bite to eat and out for a second session. Sailed with Bill, Anton, Andre Peter and Chris, and new arrivals, Rob and Gary. The water was getting nice and flat with the outgoing tide and some nice long and strong strong bullets coming through at about 25k.Had some nice bearwaways and saw a 34k on the dial.I was hoping for a PB after seeing that.A few more runs and I headed in.Pretty stoked with the result. A big thanks to Chris for the loan of your BP fin!!

Combined track below.

Hit Queens again. Adam and Steve out also. Guessing 12-18 knots s-w, super gusty for me near the launch area, anything from full plan skidding along, to glass and stop.  May have been better over behind the mud bank?? Still fun, just hard work trying to keep up with the rapid wind changes.

No magic speeds for me, just an unofficial reading off 20.41 knts. So smashed my last unofficial PB by 0.01- Woohoo! Had fun practicing gybes and getting in the straps. Mucked around on Adam's 93 litre JP wave board for 30 minutes, felt ok, but my god I need lots more practice yet...

Mark J. I'll  grab that GPS next time I'm down- should only be a few days. Cheers for getting so quick.

Thanks guys.It really was a great sensation traveling at that speed.Everything felt good with the gear. A bit nervous on some of the runs, but the flat water and the fin made a big difference.

It's good to see so many people on water around here.Always room for more!!I'll be up your way on the weekend of 11th Aug. May stay overnight and catch some of the local surf festival that's on. Hope it's windy too.I'd love a sail at Queens at the speed strip.

You'll love Sandy Point. Awesome flat water in the right direction, but take your woolies!

Hi Gabe, I would even consider anytime in October. I am not fussed on speed fortnight, would be pretty busy on the water I imagine, would rather be there with less sailors so i dont get in anyone's way. Never sailed there, but I did visit last time i was in Melb - doesnt look like much space - perhaps it was low tide (or maybe i was in the wrong spot). What is the best time to be there?  I assume when speed week is on. So Spring seabreezes or frontal best? Happy to space it for the best tides. Happy to be guided f you want to go for a run Gabe. I am not necessary chasing nuking wind, just wind and flat water - want to see what speed is. Sandy point the township looks like a hole, but looks like the place to stay to be closest to the inlet. Would take the wave gear as well incase slalom stuff is light

I've been trying to get back down there for about a year.Chris' illness meant we missed out last year.Sandy Point is quite small, but there's plenty to see and do around the area. Wilson's Prom. Windsurfing Inverloch, which I haven't done could be worth a look too.I'd be keen to surf the area too(kneeboard) I'm with you re; avoiding speed week. It's interesting but busy and the strip gets too much chop from other riders if your there when too many others are around. Chris hates the cold, and the water is COLD. We've been in April and Dec.April quiet and v.cold with Dec. busy and sometimes cold.

The wind stats are pretty good - 200 out of 365 days over 20knots.The best winds are the southwesters, but you can sail other directions too. It does get nuking sometimes and when it is epic, there'll be lots of locals. The tides have a big effect on the flatness of the water and also a worry when you park too close to the water on an incoming tide.Your car can go under on spring and neap tides if your not careful! When you sail that flat water, you'll never forget the feeling. The board feels like its on ball bearings and the wind doesn't look strong with the lack of chop, but is fantastic and flat.

Staying in the township in a rental house would be the go, but I've also camped on the other side of the inlet too.(bit of a drive) as well as camped at Bear Gully, (free and also a bit of a drive to sail.

How long were you planning on going for, and who else would you go with?

Hey AJ, we stayed at iluka cabins last month. That's about as close as u can get to sandy. I think we paid $270 for the minimum 2 nights. That was fully self contained 2 bedroom Duplex that slept 6.If I went again, I would definitely check tides to be low round lunch. Sw is best but you can sail most directions and still find flat water. West would be the worst direction. We sailed NW and had a ball. Good luck and welldone Marauders for July

Excellent Tips Mick cheers, that duplex sounds the go, and decked out with a crew it would be a great vibe! Ta

Gabe: I am happy to go down and tag along with you guys (if that suits you) when it is warmer if it suits Chris, perhaps even in November whenever those tides are best? I promise that i wouldnt impede on your privacy if we were there at the same time, would be just nice to sail a new place with someone I know. Hope Chris' health is back on track, I didnt realise she was crook. Just me at this stage. Don't think Emma (wife) and our young fella would come as it would be a pure sailing trip which wouldnt be much fun for them (gunna take them to Yamba for a couple of weeks later on this year - can still sail and surf there, but more family friendly). Would look at going to Sandy for at least a week, or more likely two weeks if I had company.

I think Nicole (SaltyNic in the team) is keen for some flatwater hit, and she was thinking about speedweek, but I reckon she might be interested in less stress and sail outside speed fortnight.. The duplex Mick is talking about sounds great, or a house, whatever. the more Marauders the Merrier - anyone else keen on a roady?

Know what you mean, there is some awesome scenery down there. I was down in Melb on Biz in April, then took a few weeks leave and spent a week hiking around Wilsons Prom with Emma and our new baby (Aidan, who we put in one of those backbreaking baby carrying hiker packs), and then a week in Mallacoota (now that also looks like an awesome sailing spot - such a vast breadth of water) before we drove home.

Happy to drive down overnight to max sailing time. You have given me a new benchmark to aim for gabe. Everytime i get a PB you just also increase yours. This sport is great, i am always learning! Let me know if any of this suits you guys. Cheers, Adam

hey AJ and Gabe, I'm not sure what you have heard but speed week/fortnight is NEVER busy. I have been going down each year for the last 4 (or is it 5) and there would only ever be a max of around 30 guys out at once. And that is max. Last year there was all of about 10-15 of us. The water doesn't get choppy with the amount of sailors around like Gabe said. It's always flat somewhere there.

You should actually try and come at that time and use the experience to hang out with like minded people and maybe pick up some tips to help you go faster. It's a great usual group that tend to go and they all love to gasbag about windsurfing at any chance they can.

Gabe

Hey Sick em, Thanks for the low down. When I said it was busy, it was the local speed festival in Jan, and I thought it would be similar with so many around. When you get one guy going off the wind there's usually someone coming back.If you get more than one down the straight then you get the wake. But I guess if it's well organised then it shouldn't be a problem.

I hear what your saying re the like minded people etc. too. I'm all for it, but a quiet one sounds the go!

AJ here's a website for more accomodation options.WWW.promaccom.com.au. Ideally, we'll need three bedrooms, I guess at this stage.

I think November could be a go-er. Two weeks could give us a good chance of scoring some decent wind and the accomodation tariffs are reasonable at this time too.
