Leighton Beach, WA, AU

Solo sail at Leighton - nice 18 to 20 knot breeze.

Wasn't expecting too much as I had to sail without the cam on the batten under the boom, as the batten-end had broken on  Sunday (again) Yell

So really pleased to get Leighton PBs in 2sec, 5 sec and 3 NMs over 28.5 knots Cool

Pelican Point, WA, AU

Started with 80l RRD board but not enough wind so changed to 98l RRD with 33 fin and 5.8m Koncept. The board change did the trick and a good afternoons sailing happened.

Had a go at the N Mile which was quite comfortable on the RRD board. Managed a PB, and not so fast that I can't better it again, hopefully soon.

Then got tired and kept falling in on jybes. Had a rest and what a diffference that made.

After work sesh at Peli in a gusty seabreeze.

Got down there at 4.15 and it looked pretty fresh, so I thought I'd chance a sesh on the new board...M112 + 7.6 TR7 + 38/40 Sting.

First 20 minutes was a bit average, board felt under-finned and I couldn't get upwind.  Changed up to the 40 Sting and she felt much better, more lively and I could point a lot higher.  I think the 38 will only be an option for really powered up conditions with the 7.6 or 7.0.

Had a pretty good sail. I was under-done a lot of the time, but the set-up felt sweet in the gusts.  Got the peak speed on a nice powered up bearaway across the shallows at the end of the point.

Tried for a couple of naughties, but the breeze was way too patchy for a decent mile.

Breeze died in the ass around 6.30.  I was way out the other side of the channel and thought I might be in for a long swim.  Waited 10 minutes for a gust to waterstart, dogged half way back and finally caught a little squirt that got me most of the way home.

The Mistral's length definitely got her planing up a little easier than my Futura 111, and likewise she is more stable to sail in sub-planing conditions.

All in all a fun little sesh. Cool

Nice open water numbers JJ. Cool

I think I'll have to bring my new toys down to Leighton for a play soon and see if I can bag the elusive 30K open water naughty.

Greg, bring your board and give it the NM a go.

Be interesting to know who has pulled off a 30+ Open Ocean NM at Leighton.

I know Norts did 31+ earlier this year and I expect Slowy would do them easily (I don't think he usually bothers).

Who else?

Hi JJ, the 30 knot NM at Leighton is great challenge, particularly as you have no idea when you have done the full NM.

AFAIK, those who have done it are Slowy, Jesper, Norts (Recycle) and me (by a bee's dick!) There are a few more who are just under.

Ok, Thanks Chris, so we have 4 confirmed 30+ NM'ers at Leighton. Jake and Greg will up it to 6 for sure...

Good to have another informal competition going...

Maybe Mark might add it to his WA 10 sec table?

I've been trying to nut out how to run a safety bay naughty too. I was going to run an actually event, but have come to the conclusion that submitting files to contest a safety bay or what ever location trophy and possible small prize pool, is easier (doesn't involve council permits etc).

Tom if you require every sailor having a crack at the SB naughty to process their file at KA72 then it really simplifies things (and makes it very transparent).  Why not start a Facebook page and then we can post links to our session there and have a 'league table'?

The great thing about the ocean NM challenge is that it doesn't require epic conditions.

On a stock standard 20 knot seabreeze day when the river is fairly pedestrian, you can still have an adrenaline-charged thrill ride chasing the naughty miles off Leighton.

Great idea pointman! I'm currently at work and will look into it in the next few days.

Yep Chris totally agree with you. That's what got me interested in the more open water NM vs smooth perfect location. I know a lot of the river crew come down to the beaver to chase speeds, but if the forecast doesn't hold, or the tides wrong, we can then sail either in the sound or the southern side if the sand spit and chase either PB's or a position on the SB Naughty table.

The best NM I've heard of was by Snake. It would be great to make it a bit more offcial and start fresh. The same could be done for a number of locations.

I'll start a thread on seabreeze GPS & Speed Sailing, to keep it out of the wayCool

If I remember right, I think Pointy and Lao have also smashed the 30knot NM barrier at the beaver, Pointy had a goodun here:
