Sailing Club, Wallis Lake, NSW, AU

What a day.Thought we'd get a sunny day and some OK wind.WRONG!! Lately we've been hammered by wind and rain from the North and now from the south. Wind finally kicked in by about 10.00 ish and not long later the rain. The wind was not a lot of fun.More volume would have helped when not powered. Gusty 5-25k WSW to SW and some stronger with rain squalls that hurt the face to sail.

Not a lot of fun bogging and waiting to waterstart in the coolish water. Only wore a springy today. Had two sessions, hoping the wind would settle while I had some lunch. Rigged 5.5 Vapor, SL79 Vector 27 weedspeed. Boy did I need that weedy. The north end of the lake was choked withlarge rafts of weed blown in from the previous wind. The flat water was nowhere to be seen. Did manage the peak speed over near the island weed banks though, so it was worth going over to it.The numbers speak for themselves. Not the best of sessions.

Good crowd today despite the crappy weather. Pete, Rob, Bill, Anton, Andre and later Pete and Hamish rocked up to have a go. A couple from Sydney turned up and had a lash in the "washing machine" Good effort from both, on 4.7's. as Rob said you could have used a 6.0 or a 4.7 today and manage a few runs.Hoping tomorrow will be better. Looked at "Lizzy" Beach on the way home, and the surf was looking quite nice with around a dozen locals getting a decent 1.5 -2m wave in strong offshore conditions. Left the board at home, otherwise would probably have gone out. Hope the rest of you guys did well.

Sailed with Steve , Mark J, Adam , Greg, Dave, Jim & one of Adam's mates.

Had a good time sailing in wind over 30 knots. This time I had the right sail choice. Very Happy I did a top speed of 34.07 knots.

Very happy with my 2 PB's. Great day for once on a weekend. Will have 6 plus beers tonight to celebrate!!! YesSSSSSSSSSSSS!

FAlcon Slalom 79 + 30cm FO Weedy + 6.6 HSM GPS

Nice arvo at Queens. Water warm depsite all the fresh in it. Wind was 25kn SW in the gusts perhaps on the mudbank, but way more brutal in the open lake with shit loads of nasty chop. Even the mudbank was choppier than usual with the high tide and extra water, but still way fun. Took advice from Mark.J and moved the mast track back a bit and the board sailed over the mudbank chop no worries and was way more controllable. Got the tail end of a couple of lucky gusts on the bank.

I reckon that on a day where the SW is more consistant, but say similar stregnth, someone on the team will crack 40 there for sure - could even be this winter - let's hope! Great to see lots of guys on the water today

Graeme borrowed by Falcon 99 today and did over 35. Bastard! My best peak on that board is only 34.5!

My tracks:

3.7 Gaastra Grind, 85lt BiC Saxo, 25cm wave fin.  Got there about 5pm and the lake was white.  Peter and Hamish were coming in as I was heading out.  Big, short, sharp chop no good for speed, just survival sailing so didnt stay out for long, good to have a crack in some heavy wind.

My anemometer peaked at 28kts on the shoreline amongst the trees before I left.  That would be close to 35 on the water!

Hamish Stuart (728km):

Way overpowered today on my 5.9 loft. It was survival sailing.

Great Speeds Gabe & Steve.

As I was leaving to come home Greg just came in and said Adam has done over 36 Knots. He will be stocked!!Cool

Greg stuffed his fin by hitting the post on the mud bank. Steve we will have to mark it properly before some one gets hurt or wrecks their board.

Marrk.H Congrats on your PBs for 5x10 and 2sec peak!!!! well deserved mate

Congrats other PBers as well, Mark.J and Greg.

Thanks for the tip Mark.J, it really helped. put my 92kg to good use on a couple of lucky gusts. The 92kg has to be an advantage somewhere - certainly a disadvantage wavesailing in light summer NE

Heya Gabe, Mark J still holds the record for queens by a chunk at close to 38 from memory.

Hey Mark.J - Yes, boat over, rig on mud bank - speed boards out. Fanging to give the Falcon Speed 51 a run on the mudbank in a smashing winter SW.

A note to the Captain: Nice touch with the piccy Mark.H. I know when I type that I speak for all of the Marauders when I say thanks for being such an awesome Captain with your encouragement, and also for going the extra mile with the graphics each time we post, team facebook page and stuff like above. Top job mate, keep it up the good work Cap, and again, congrats on your 2 PBs......yesterday was a great day to get it too as it wasnt an easy day, so to get 2 PBs off it was pretty special.

On the subject of the submerged pole that took out Gregs fin - damn it made a mess - got me thinking how tragic it would be if someone fell off at the wrong time and impailed themselves! Very slim chance I know, but we cant say that it won't happen, cos the chance of Greg also hitting it with his fin was also prob one in a million given how big the lake is. I will buy a bright piece of floaty spongue or pool tube and tie to it as a warning of where it is....will attach it next time I am down, or alternatively Mark if you sail before me I can give it to you to attach. I haven't been close enough to the pole to see if there are any holes in it to attach something to it or not....... MArk or Steve do you know? Was thinking rope, but I have some cable ties, perhaps they would be more durable?

Yesterday highlighted what a danger it could be. We need to keep the lake as a safe place of joy and thrills

Adam,

I hit the Post to with my fin , but only slightly damaged it. I thought I had put a hole in my board .The Post is usually out of the water. Due to the Hight tide and rain water the post was submerged.

I talked to Mark J today he said one afternoon after work we could mark it with some Orange Conduit and put a flag on the top of it. Go out in Marks Boat.Mark has some flags. Tie it on with cable ties. Plus, Mark the other end of the mud bank the same way but hit the Conduit down into the mud with a Hammer.

I am only free Mon, Tues after work or next week end?( water will be lower) This must be done.  (Steve should have some conduit or I will buy some.)

AJEaster

NSW
Australia
4340 days ago

Mark.H and Mark.J,

Conduit, great idea, way more durable. Flags as well, excellent!!!!!! This means that with better vision for the start of the bank we can plan the run in over the mudbank from a distance for max speed etc........ and a boat to do it all in, even better. Happy to help if you need me to jump in the mud or anything. Free Monday arvo, Wed arvo this week, or anytime on the weekend coming up. Good work and ideas fellas.

Didnt know you hit it as well Capt. Two strikes in one session - what are the chances? bloody hell!!!!!   With everyone heading to the flat water on the mud bank these days it just highlights even more now how dangerous it is in deep/heavy/muddy water on the bank. Lets fix her up ASAP before the Autumn winds!

Let me know if you need my help, happy to come for a ride in the boat even........., AE
