A day of firsts for me. First day at a speed course, first time on a speed board and first time hiting 40kts.
Made the trip up to WK with a fair bit of apprehension but in the end had the best days sailing ever.
Arrived about 10ish and stood in awe as I watched all the big guns nuke it down the course. Unfortunately my smallest sail is a 5.8 and after hearing most were on smaller I carried on watching from the comfort of my car building up courage and looking at how it should be done.
At 12 I plucked up the courage, rigged up and got out there. First couple of runs were bloody scary and out of control but with peaks of only 25 and 28kts :-(. Decided to just go for it and sheet in - steadily I improved run by run 35, 36, 37, 38, 39 (interspersed with a couple of wipeouts and a batten breakage) getting closer and closer to the wall. It all paid off and eventually I saw the magic 40kts on the screen - AWESOME!! Bucket load of PB’s smashed too.
Definitely need to work on the technique and kit tuning but hopefully that will come with practice. Top day, top company and looking forward to doing it all again soon...
