Kaleb in goning feral, I got a phone call at 8am from Kaleb, he was stuck on droughty Point with a broken boom, that was weird to start with as its the first time he ever sailed with a mobile.  I picked him up, dropped him at Doran's and he was back out in the water at 9am.  I left Dorans 5pm and he was still out not just sailing, but jumping on the waist high chop.

Fantastic effort Kaleb and well done on sailing over 300 km's in what must have been pretty wild conditions today.  Your enthusiasm and determination is inspiring, and your recent GPS achievements are nothing short of amazing (42 knots, 37 NM, 300 kms, 24+ 1 hr and 24+ alpha), all in just a few months.  The whole team has really found a new lease of life through the new members we've gained and it's going to be great next year seeing how we all go.  You've certainly raised the bar and it is great to see.

Well done Ant for backing Kaleb up and putting the Tassie Speed Seekers back in first place. 

I certainly agree with Russell's comments that 2011 is going to be a fun year for windsurfing in TAS!!

Well done gang, especially Kaleb, I saw you out there last night again, you must have been out there all day!!. After today I'll be able to get out there and help, my screenprinting customers just don't understand that I really should be out there getting the kms up instead of doing their work. It's soooooo frustrating.

Wow Kaleb, holy crap that is  truely awesome over 300km you were definately on a mission. You have catapulted us into first place, huge well done. Daves 500km distance record is definately under threat. Bring on next year.

It was a long day!  The first 20km took an hour and then when the wind finally settled in I broke a boom(arm and tail piece) just after 30km.  I managed to salvage a bit of the tail and use the good arm to get me 1 km back to shore, however, I was on the wrong side of the bay and didn't want to risk turning the boom over and saing 4km downwind in 25-30 knots.  Luckily for the first time ever I had my mobile with me.  Half an hour later Anthony Houston came to the rescue and took me back to my car(yes tracks have been deleted)thanks Ant.

Back out again, the plan was to head up wind into Mortimer Bay and do a down wind one hour back to Dorans.  The trip up was hard work, the chop was really short and bad and pounded the bag out of me.  The wind had been SW but had gone round to the W, creating two chop formations that came at me and converged to make new lumps that stood up and hit like sledge hammers.  It was one long run from Droughty Point up into Mortimer Bay.  I stayed in Mortimer and did a few runs in the flatter water until I was ready to do the ultimate one hour to blow away all my other attempts.  Err! No! 5 minutes in and it was out of control, the chop was just far too short, steep and confused to keep any real speed.  I decided to head into Shelly Beach at the back of Opposum Bay.  The wind in there was off shore but windy enough to fill in close to the beach.  Although it was quite gusty it was still good fun. 

It was about 1pm and I was in need of food and WATER so I decided to go for a one hour back down into Dorans.  I headed of at 30 knots felling realy comfortable and confident that this was going to be big, ten minutes later I was screaming at Huey to give me F...... break.

As I headed out from the safety of Opossum Bay I hit Chop that was around head high which I didnt mind too much, the problem was the extra chop that ran along the face of the big chop.  No, not one extra chop but two running in opposite directions and coming together to form super chops that surge upwards on the face of the head high chop.  To say the least it was totally out of control, there  was chop actually running back into the wind.  The only thing I could put this down to was that after a really high tide in the morning Mortimer Bay, Ralphs Bay and the Derwent River had tidal flows that converge in that area and with the wind running against the flow was having some effect.  What ever it was I just wanted out of there. 

The sail back was painful, my right bicept kept cramping and I was in constant fear of catapult as the the board would bury into chop that I hadnt even seen coming.  The wind had picked up to around 40 and I was sailing in an up right position slightly sheeted out and constantly doing major trim adjustments as a flat section would appear and I could sheet in and surge on to only be grabbed by phantom chop. I would classify this bit as survival sailing on the edge of disaster. Good Fun!!  Even though I just wanted it over and at times thought I was going to have to sit it out in the water and wait for the wind to ease. Never!!

Back at Dorans the water was a lot more settled than what I had just sailed through and I could relax again, although I realy needed to ditch the 5.6 and put on a 4.7 wave sail and enjoy the rest of the day.

My original goal along with the one hour, which didn't happen, was to get 350km by 6pm. That way with what ever other team members posted we would pick up a few points for December and put us clear in front.  The broken boom had put me way behind that goal so I had settled on 300 hoping that Anthony or Russ would get the extra 50+ needed.

I went back out with a 4.7 and an old freestyle wave board, I had 100km to go.  After the adrenaline charged sailing I had encountered earlier it was great fun to just blast around and get a heap of jumps.  All was going well util at arond 50km the wind backed off and I was left wallowing around on and off the plane.  I refused to give in until finally the wind came back in and I made the 100, well actually I did about 109 to make sure.  The last 50 took 2hours 45 and it went on forever.

Now my face hurts really bad as the sun was out all day and I forgot to put on sunscreen.  And I must get some sunglasses for water use, my eyes hurt like hell and look like I've been taking drugs for days.

Great read Kaleb, Steve and I have sailed in that same chop before and it is incredibly hard going, it's like the Bermuda Triangle of horrible chop!!  There is nothing else to be said about it other than "avoid at all costs".  Sounds like you got a good dose of it.

Oh yeah, now I remember. That is the hardest worst chop you can imagine.

Almost forgot to say big well done to Ant and Russ for the back up km. Although it was only 50-60km it all really helps.

It forms vetical walls out of nowhere, just as you think "here is a small flat section to just glide along for 1 second between nasty bone-jaring chop"!!

Kaleb, Sensational effort and great story to boot.  The Tassie SPeed seekers are really gelling as the team to beat in 2011.  If you and Dave ever talk and have a big days sailing I doubt any team on earth could beat your distance average.  Must be something in those polluted waters you guys sail in (or the fact you're all your brother's cousin's sister's father's nephew - sorry but when a team starts getting as good as the TSS,  the tassie jokes are bound to come out )
