Looked at Point Walter early to find Lao and Scargo dodging bullets and decided on Saftey Bay .Arrived to no wind and a skunked looking slowie and Daryl ,did not have to wait long for it to return, there was at least one 40 knt gust registered on the beach! and still blowing hard when I left 5 hrs later.

Safety Bay, WA, AU

had a real struggle today spent most of the time on the 5.5 (same as the big guys)

totally over cooked using too big a board and too small a fin.

it def was fun but i couldnt make the best of the conditions.

ended up having a quick sail on the koncept 4.4 a sail i havent seen for some years

and ended up with way too much downhaul and hence a flat twitchy as sail which didnt make it any easier.

all in all it was still fun a great watching the big boys fly on small gear.

well done to slowy for massive speeds in open ocean (surely some of the fastest open water speeds ever?)!!

and also to John for great speeds as well!!

Epic day at Safety Bay for me... windy while Darryl and I rigged for 8am start. Dropped when we put our harnesses on. That resulted in some venting due to a late night with no sleep due to the house threatening to take off, and the expectation that the epic wind was probably done for the day. While Darryl went to fetch coffee from the cafe across the road the wind came back a bit. Enough for a couple of 40s on the dial,  with some extended patches of wind averaging ~25kts. The wind backed off so I came back in to do a bit of business. Again the million dollar dunny was rendered "out of service" after I finished, so I figured I needed to compensate my sudden weight loss with some lead. I wore ~4-5kg all day after that.

Some wicked squalls came through- easily pushing up over 45kts, but no flat water with the wind chop wrecking the weed bank aka "the unkept brazilian". I had a go in the pond for a few runs and timed it with a nice squall that Adam had the wind meter pegging at 40kts! It was a wild slingshot affair with a hairy exit. Got a couple of 44s on the dial and my fastest 2 runs of the day. The other best runs were over the weed bank.

All up a great day and it pained me to leave early due to cramps getting the better of me. The chop on the outside was a hideous washing machine of wind chop, base swell, and reflections all jacking up in all directions. Board snapping material. But it was windy... and that means... speeeeeeed. Just as I left a squall came though that would have been pushing easily towards 50kts. I was just about getting blown over derigging in it, and there was full smoke on the water. Shame there was no flat water to go with it since the wind had a touch too much west in it, rendering the slingshot a very dangerous affair.

Stoked with the numbers. 34 runs with 40 on the dial, 29 of them over 41 :) with 18 over 40 on the 10sec. I think this is my second fastest 5x10 in WA, so pretty happy with that.

Good to see the usual suspects. Hope you all had fun.

EIII 5.5m, 46cm speed, KA21 asy (which was fanging it! even got a 40 on the wrong tack).

Edit: covered some ground. A few gybes on the outside and a few crashes where my front foot wouldnt come out of the strap without pulling the board with it. oopsies. Results from GPSresults.

Great speeds, Recycle looks like you made the right choice. Plenty of wind at Wallyworld but the tide never dropped enough.

As usual superlatives are insufficient, Mr Boat. I am humbled.Embarassed You even beat me for distance no wonder you were crampingSurprised

thanks guys. Still buzzing...

Thanks for posting the pics Cheryl Cool. The pic of Darryl gives a pretty good idea of how flat the outer weed bank was getting in the best parts. There were only small patches of flattish water like that, the rest of the time there was wind chop and swell breaking over the bank. If the storm surge was lower it would have been unreal, but the water level stayed up all day. My best speed there was a 43.8 max and 42 10 sec on another run.

There is a sand bar which has moved from the GE pic- I think its pretty obvious where it should be from the track overlay. The fastest 2 runs were heading south behind the sandbar (which at the time was quite tight angle) then slingshotting out into bay. It seemed to pressurise on the point. When the wind went back more to the west it was too broad along the last part of the bar to slingshot off without having to smash through some horrible sharp cross chop which was pretty dangerous, and the wind wasnt so intense there any more- it was more gusty. And there was the seaweed soup concentrate which required plenty of chop hops to clear it on approach to the outer bank when the pond run didnt fire (the backup plan).

Troppo, I was on the old green 46 from last year. New ones arent here yet.

Nelson, not only do they need to install much bigger piping, they need to allow more than half a square of paper out of the dispenser per sitting...

Gnarly stuff indeed. The chatter and pounding must be intense through the board and lower limbs?

Grats Slowie on showing us how it can be done and to those other sailors out there to:-) An inspirationCool

the safety bay dunny is no museum piece... But the contractor clearly specified the wrong gauge of pipe for western loads. It reminds me of a holiday in Thailand where we had to call a plumber to the chalet to fix a similar problem. I have the photo of the poor bastard to prove it Innocent

Jac, the pic of snides is right in the best part of the run. You can see the small waves rolling over the bank (which was about 0.7 to 1m deep) gave some patches of smoother water but you had to hunt for them. The nature of the chop was quite spaced a lot of the time, with some troughs, so it was possible to go fast. It was quite gusty too, mostly 18-25kts with regular short gusts over 30. My best run on the weed bank was the only one where I had a solid gust for more than a couple of seconds. I could have done with more wind, but that would have just made the chop worse. The waves wrap around the weed bank so you have nowhere to go but over them, so it can be quite an interesting experience staying in control at full speed- especially when you fly out of a gust into a big lull and chop- very entertaining. The chop on the outside of the bank where you finish the short run is very much like sailing back upwind at Fuerte (you can remember that stuff surely), but with a bigger swell component. Quite tricky to gybe in with a speed board.

The pond is the inside of the sand bar, which has a lot of curve on it now. Its too short to be useful for anything but straight SW wind. As soon as the wind gets more west in it the runout is too broad and choppy so you have to sail away from the bank. Also the wind switches off where you want more. At the right angle the slingshot run is perfect for a couple of seconds until you hit the cross chop from the other side of the bar (at full speed). At that wind direction, for some reason the wind pressurises at the end where you need it for the slingshot. Thats where I got my fastest runs. Crazy accelleration for a few seconds in proper flat water. Wicked adrenaline rush. Different to the weed bank which is a more steady buildup to speed, ultimately limited by the chop (and wind).

With a bit lower tide and more south in the wind, the weed bank will be much faster if we ever get the wind to line up. In that direction the run is a little longer. In summer we could get some seabreezes with 30kts in the gusts. I have a mission to show its the fastest water in western australia. The fastest spot so far is only 6 minutes from my house, but its horribly gusty and tedious, and takes a special day to pull the bigger numbers. Safety bay is on open ocean, full of white pointers, and nice clean water. With a solid seabreeze and low tide (without too much teabag pollution) it will be on. But like yesterday, I cant see the speeds being "amazing" compared to more friendly speed runs around the world. Still a whole lot of fun and a great challenge to try to go fast here.

Could be a repeat on Wed... maybe not so windy though.
